The Police Community Relations Committee (PCRC) has sounded an alarm over the pervasive "hatred" towards officers of the Nigeria Police Force, citing its detrimental impact on national security.
Speaking at the 40th anniversary celebration of the Committee in Abeokuta, Ogun State, Mogaji Olaniyan, the National Chairman of PCRC, emphasized the urgent need to address the strained relationship between communities and the police to combat insecurity effectively.
Olaniyan urged for a paradigm shift, advocating for increased love and respect towards the Nigeria Police, asserting that fostering a positive and enduring bond between the police and the community is essential to dispelling negative perceptions.
He highlighted the role of societal influence in perpetuating animosity towards law enforcement, citing instances where parents threaten their children with police intervention as a disciplinary measure. Olaniyan underscored the importance of breaking this cycle of hostility from an early age to cultivate a culture of mutual respect and cooperation between citizens and law enforcement.
"We are calling that people should love the Nigeria Police, this is what they lack. Right from childhood, we have created enmity between our children and the Nigeria Police," stated Olaniyan.
He emphasized the need for collective efforts to dismantle existing biases and foster a sense of unity in the fight against crime, urging individuals to embrace a more positive narrative surrounding law enforcement.
As the PCRC continues its mission to bridge the gap between communities and the police, stakeholders are called upon to join forces in promoting understanding, trust, and collaboration to enhance national security and safeguard the well-being of all citizens.
