Banks in Ekpoma, Esan West Local Government Area, Edo State have vowed to remain closed until they are assured of adequate security in the area.

Chairman of the Ekpoma branch of the Bankers Forum, Mr. Raphael Ibodeme, said this on Saturday, after a meeting of the forum.

Ibodeme noted that a robbery attack on the Union Bank and Zenith Bank branches in Ekpoma which took place in March had led banks in the area to close shop for over a month.

The near simultaneous attack on both banks, late in the night was however repelled by policemen, who successfully scuttled the robbers’ operation.

The bankers, in a communiqué released after the meeting, said inadequate security in the area was largely responsible for incessant bank robberies in the area.

The Bankers Forum lamented what it described as a significant reduction in the number of Joint Task Force operatives drafted to the area, “notwithstanding the monthly dues being paid by the banks for this purpose.”

They also decried non-utilisation of the money paid to the Nigeria Police Force and Edo government by banks to effect repair of Armoured Personnel Carrier to be stationed in Ekpoma to combat bank robbery.

Ibodeme told journalists, “Having appraised the security situation in the area, we have decided not to open our doors to customers until there is reasonable assurance of security in the area.

“We demand the immediate deployment of APC that banks collectively paid for its repair and more APCs to the area.

“We have also demanded that more JTF personnel be deployed in the area.”
