An attack on a cattle market in northeastern  city of Potiskum by gunmen armed with explosives has left at least 34 dead and the toll is likely to climb, an emergency source said on Thursday.

“Thirty-four bodies were deposited at the hospital,” the official said on condition of anonymity of the attack late Wednesday in Potiskum because he was not authorised to speak publicly.

He said the toll was likely to be more than 50 dead because families were also burying relatives’ bodies without bringing them to the hospital.

A gang of gunmen with explosives have attacked a cattle market in the city of Potiskum, burning it down and leaving a number of people dead, residents and police said Thursday.

The attack late Wednesday was said to be in reprisal for an incident earlier in the day, when the gang sought to rob the market but were fought off by traders who caught one of the attackers, a police source said.

The man who was caught was doused in petrol and a tyre was placed around his neck before he was burnt to death, according to the source and residents.

“There was an attack on Potiskum cattle market yesterday by suspected armed robbers who threw explosives and burnt down the market with all the livestock,” the police official said on condition of anonymity.

“It is too early to say how many people were affected in the attack, which happened at night.”

Residents reported seeing bodies being taken away, but the number of casualties was unclear. (AFP)

He said the toll was likely to be more than 50 dead because families were also burying relatives’ bodies without bringing them to the hospital.

Witnesses said the gunmen started shooting in the market, trying to steal cattle. They said three people at the market were killed, as a fourth man suspected to be part of the group of robbers was set afire while still alive and died of his burns.

Police confirmed the attack happened but said they had no details.

The attack does not appear to be the work of the radical Islamist sect Boko Haram, which is waging an increasingly violent sectarian fight against Nigeria’s weak central government. Cattle raids remain common across the north, as herdsmen lead teams across the arid plains.

This is the right time we Nigerians act like men and stop this mess of everyday bombings. The East, West and North are not in anyway related to each other. So the best thing is to split the country into three. Islam is a big disease to Christianity. You will only be hearing bombing news only in Muslim counties. phyuk BOKO HARAM, phyuk ISLAM, phyuk MUSLIM AND phyuk ALL THE MUSLIM NORTHERN NIGERIA.

una sure say dis news na Correct news
it's correct. check on BBC.

At least 34 people have been killed in an attack on a cattle market in north-eastern Nigeria, security officials have told the BBC.

Another 29 people were injured, said Nigerian military spokesman Col Dahiru Abdussalam.

The market in Potiskum, Yobe state, was set on fire by gunmen armed with explosives.

Police say the attack may be in revenge for the killing by traders of a man who had earlier tried to steal cattle.

'Threw explosives'

The joint taskforce, a combined operation between Nigeria's army and police, is pursuing the "unidentified gunmen", Col Abdussalam said.

"A group of gunmen armed with around 20 explosives and assault rifles attacked the Potiskum cattle market," police spokesman Toyin Gbadegesin told the AFP news agency.

"They threw explosives and shot indiscriminately, setting fire to the market, killing lots of livestock and wounding many people, mostly cattle dealers," he said.

A gang of men locked the gate of Potiskum's fenced cattle market, trapping many traders and livestock inside, residents told the BBC.

The market - a bustling trading hub, with cattle on sale from neighbouring Chad, Cameroon and Niger - was razed to the ground late on Wednesday and many animals were also burned to death, residents say.

Witnesses say they saw several bodies being removed from the market.

Correspondents say the attack does not appear to be the work of the radical Islamist group Boko Haram, which has carried out deadly bombings and shootings across northern Nigeria, including Potiskum, in the past 20 months.

Cattle raids are common in the north of Nigeria.

anytime u see a story always check on BBC or Thesun.co.uk that is where Naijapals gets most of their news from.
