ShareUNIVERSITY workers, under the auspices of the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), on Sunday, said President Goodluck Jonathan is better than previous presidents and heads of state, which include Chief Olusegun Obasanjo; General Ibrahim Babangida; the late General Sani Abacha; General Abdulsalami Abubakar and his immediate predecessor, the late Alhaji Umaru Yar’Adua

SSANU, in a statement signed by its general secretary, Promise Adewusi, on behalf of the president, Mr Samson Ugwoke, National Executive Council (NEC) and all SSANU members, said President Jonathan had done what the five former presidents and heads of state could not do.

Adewusi commended Jonathan for the historic signing into law of the 65 years retirement age Act for non-teaching workers of Nigerian universities and described him as “a covenant-keeping president.”

“That you have been able to do what five previous heads of state could not do has marked you out as a covenant-keeping president,” the SSANU general secretary said.

Adewusi also recalled that it was also under Jonathan presidency that the non-teaching staff in Nigerian universities got a new lease of life by way of parity in basic salaries of all university workers.

He pleaded with the president to direct the appropriate authorities to also conclude the issue of the earned allowance as contained in the 2009 agreement signed with the Federal Government.

Adewusi said the signing into law of the 65 years retirement age by President Jonathan had brought to a conclusive end, the acrimony that had dogged the regime of discriminatory retirement age against the non-teaching staff of the universities, spanning over 15 years.

He, however, assured that the union would ensure industrial peace in the universities.
