THE Niger Delta Citizens and Budget Platform has called on the Rivers State House of Assembly to repeal the new law on Public Office Holders Pension.

The State Governor, Mr. Rotimi Amaechi, recently assented the law that would ensure that former governors and their deputies got two houses, three cars each and other fringe benefits.

But the NDCBP Coordinator, Mr. Ken Henshaw, on Monday in Port Harcourt, described the law as obnoxious, undemocratic and anti-people.

He urged the state legislature to abolish the law in the interest of the people.

Henshaw wondered at  the speed at which the State House of Assembly passed the bill into law and insisted that the bill did not undergo due legislative process before it was finally endorsed.

“We observe that this (passage of the bill into law) is coming at a time when Rivers State Government has at various times admitted that its financial situation was precarious,” Henshaw noted.

He expressed worry that the government decided to increase the already over-bloated fortunes of ex-governors and their deputies.

“Politics is supposed to be a part time venture and it is not pensionable. Youth unemployment is an admitted problem in Rivers State. The money that would be used to cater for former governors should be used to address the problem of unemployment,” he said.
