Dr. Monica Philips, the state’s Commissioner for Education said a special team had been raised to arrest such children in any part of the state and prosecute their parents or guardians. The commissioner said the law prohibiting hawking had been in existence in the state, stressing that the decision to enforce it was to secure the future of the Abia child and check incidents of child labour.
She said the ministry had intensified supervision of schools, noting that loitering and truancy by the staff would not be tolerated.“Teachers are now consciously sitting up to face the challenges of their profession.“Gone are the days when teachers would sit in a corner gossiping and engaging in things that are unprofessional,’’ Philips said. She said the ministry had adopted a measure by which teachers only got paid for the days they worked.
“In some secondary schools, we deduct between N1,000 and N2,000 from erring teachers’ salaries daily,” she said, adding that the measure had made teachers to be alive to their duties.
