Also arrested with the soldier were Ernest Osigbemhe and Stanley Nnorom.
A police source told our reporter that acting on a tip off on Wednesday afternoon; FCT SARS operatives trailed a Toyota Corolla car with Registration number FL 811 LSR that was robbed at gunpoint.
The source said the car was recovered in Minna, Niger State, which led to the arrest of the suspects. He alleged that Stanley Nnorom and Lance Corporal Suleiman Amidu confessed they snatched the car from a man in Enugu, while Earnest Osigbemhe received the stolen car in Abuja on behalf of one Alhaji Yahaya, his master.
“They also confessed that they snatched a Toyota Spider car a few months ago and sold it to one Alhaji Yahaya of no fixed address,” the policeman said.
He alleged that the soldier confessed to supplying the gang with two locally made pistols and ammunitions that were used for their operations, adding that the arms are with one Anukeni, the gang leader.
“Earnest Osigbeme also confessed that he drives stolen cars and works for Alhaji Yahaya and one Mallam Sani. The suspect said he delivered more than 10 stolen cars to Alhaji Yahaya and also delivered four to Mallam Sani,” the source added.
Reacting to the allegations, Stanley Nnorom, a suspect, said he is jobless professional driver who was introduced to crime by one Hamidu Suleiman, a soldier.
He said the soldier supplies them with gun while they disguise as passengers in buses during operations.
According to the suspect, the soldier uses his military identity card to clear the way for the gang members to beat checkpoints.
Another suspect, Lance Corporal Suleman Ameidu (97 NA/45/7367) admitted knowing Alhaji Yahaya through Earnest. He confessed to snatching cars with the gang since April this year, adding that he got the six ammunitions used for the operation from outside special duty.
“I collected two locally made pistols and an AK47 from a mobile policeman on duty in Port Harcourt and also gave the policeman N12000 for ammunitions,” he said.
Osigbemhe Earnest, a suspect also confessed to being a member of the gang.
Responding, FCT SARS Commandant, Chief Superintendent Ben Igweh, declined to comment and directed our reporter to FCT Police Command, where Deputy Superintendent Mustapha Rashid, spokesman of the command confirmed the story and said they will be arraigned in court after thorough investigations.
