Govt to improve sanitary condition of Ibadan

JULY 4, 2012 BY AKINWALE ABOLUWADE, IBADAN 1 COMMENT
The Oyo State Government on Tuesday pledged to improve the sanitary condition of Ibadan, the state capital, and its environs.

The 2006 report of the United Nations Development Programme ranked Ibadan among the dirtiest cities in the world.

The state government on Tuesday said it would procure sets of waste compactors to fast-track the improvement of environmental sanitation in the state.

The Commissioner for Environment and Habitat, Mr. Wasiu Dauda, said most of the compactors that were procured by past administrations were in state of disrepair.

He said, “Most of the trucks that were procured by past administrations in the state for waste disposal are already in bad shape. Hardly can we find any of the vehicles useful at the moment. We are just in the process of procuring new compactor trucks to clear the refuse.”

On flood prevention, the commissioner said the illegal structures marked for demolition by the state government were being demolished to give way for free passage of water.

Dauda said, “We demolish illegal structures on daily basis; we don’t want to witness flood disaster again in the state.

“Dredging of streams is ongoing. Recently, there was downpour that could have wreaked havoc but we did not witness another disaster because the streams and rivers had been dredged.”
