FOUR children from three local government areas of Zamfara State had suffered paralysis, as a result of polio disease in the last six months.

This was disclosed by the Executive Director, National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA), Dr Ado Muhammad, while speaking in Gusau, the state capital, during the polio-free torch campaign, which had in attendance traditional rulers and religious leaders from the 19 northern states and Abuja.

According to him, “from January till date, four children have been paralysed by polio in Zamfara State.

He said the paralysis and deaths caused by polio were avoidable and preventable, adding that the main objective of the campaign was to overcome individual and community resistance to the oral polio vaccine and to mobilise support so as to stop the transmission of the wild polio virus.

According to him, the continuous transmission of the virus was due to poor quality of the polio campaigns conducted by states of the federation, adding that this had caused death and paralysis of many children who could have been useful to the development of the country.
