The Inspector General of Police, Mohammad Dahiru Abubakar, yesterday said the country is not ripe for state police. This was contrary to the call for its establishment by the Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF). The NGF at the end of their last meeting in Abuja advocated for the establishment of state police as a panacea to the growing insecurity in the country. However, while responding to questions from newsmen during his visit to Kaduna, the IG said; “Nigeria is not ripe for the establishment of state police. You could imagine if you have a state police commissioner being controlled by the state”. While reiterating the determination of the police to confront the Boko Haram insurgency, he said the casualty recorded in confronting the sect is high. “We are still compiling it and all I can tell you is that the casualty figure is high,” he added.
