The much anticipated repair work on the Third Mainland Bridge in Lagos is expected to begin fully today with diversion of traffic to alternative routes within the metropolis. Minister of State for Works, Ambassador Bashir Yuguda, had told newsmen in Lagos last week that the repair which will last four months became necessary because of the importance the Federal Government attaches to the bridge, calling for support and cooperation of all Nigerians during the period.
He also disclosed that work may not start as expected yesterday as the contractors were expected to use the day to move their materials and equipment to site for full commencement of work today. He added that bridge will be closed partially as repair work will start from the Ebute-Metta interchange to Adeniji Adele, while the second phase which is on the Oworosoki bound will commence after this time.
“This project will last for four months so we are asking for support, understanding and the cooperation of all Nigerians,” he said. This is the most important bridge that we have not only in Nigeria but in Africa, and the president attaches a lot of importance to the bridge,” he said. Lagos State commissioner of Transportation, Mr. Kayode Opeifa, also implored motorists not to panic during the period, saying alternative routes are available to them.
“We have done it before in 2008 but now it will be better because the options are better with the construction of the other routes. The options are better as long as we drive safely and in accordance with traffic rules,” he said. He noted that the availability of water transportation in the state will also help in moving commuters easily.
According to a communiqué issued at the end of the stakeholders meeting, alternative routes to Lagos and Victoria Island include; Ikorodu Road- Yaba- Oyingbo-Iddo-Lagos Island; Ikorodu Road-Western Avenue-Lagos Island; Agege motor Road-Oshodi-Apapa-Lagos Island/ Victoria and Apapa-Oshodi Expressway-mile 12-Orile-Lagos Island/ Victoria.
