Angry Fulani herdsmen, uncomfortable with the camps prepared for them by the Plateau State government ahead of the military operations being planned by Special Task Force (STF), have deserted them and headed back to their homes.

A security source who monitored the development confirmed to SaharaReporters that the irate herdsmen decided to move back to their homes today, claiming that adequate preparations had not been made for them, and that some of their wives and children have fallen sick as a result.

Some of them also complained that they were told that the operations will last only 48 hours, only to learn later that they will take about two weeks.

Another reason being cited for their action is the commencement of the Muslim Ramadan fast in a few hours.
One of the Fulani leaders, Saleh Bayeri, who is the Acting Secretary of Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria, confirmed that some of them have actually left the camps located in Barkin Ladi and Riyom local government areas.

He said, “We were [told] only two days and the headquarters in Abuja are [now] saying two weeks. And it is the talk about two weeks that [is uppermost in] our people’s minds and especially looking at the Ramadan Fasting. We on our own have pleaded with the Commander General Ayoola with whom we went round the camps and he sees the situation, to also plead with his superiors to take into consideration of our problems.”

It was also learnt that among the herdsmen, there is apprehension that returning to their homes without clearance may led to further security challenges.
