The policemen, who were said to be attached to the Federal Special Anti-Robbery Squad in Lagos, did not only refuse to stop after Shigunlese was hit, they assaulted and arrested Michael for attempting to prevent them from fleeing the scene of the incident.
Narrating what happened, Shigunlese said, “I boarded a commercial motorcycle from my home at Coast Street, Ebute-Meta to Oto at about 10 am. I wanted to buy some items at Ebute-Meta. The okada man dropped me beside the BRT bus stop at Oto.
“I was about to walk across the road when I saw a green Golf 3 car coming towards me. Before I could jump back from the road, the car hit me and the next I knew, I was on the ground.”
Wounded and unable to lift himself from the ground, Shigunlese had broken the Golf’s windscreen with his head, which was now bleeding.
Horrified at the callousness of the driver of the vehicle, Michael had given chase and caught up with the car at Ebute-Ero.
“Although I had dropped off Shigunlese, I had not left the area before he was hit. When the car refused to stop, a passerby and I gave chase on my motorcycle. We chased the speeding car to Ebute-Ero and blocked them from moving. We wanted them to take responsibility what they had done to Shigunlese.
“Two men jumped out of the car. They were armed with guns and angry with us. They said they were policemen. And they called us robbers. We tried in vain to explain what had befallen Shigunlese, but they wouldn’t listen. They just descended on us and beat us up,” Michael recounted.
After assaulting the okada rider and his passenger with the butt of their guns, the policemen bundled them into their vehicle and took them to FSARS office at Adeniji Adele.
Michael’s motorcycle was abandoned on the road despite his pleas to the police officers that it would be stolen.
At the FSARS station, both men were allegedly tortured and beaten by the two policemen who were later identified as Corporal Audu Emmanuel and Corporal Hamazat.
“It wasn’t until a senior police officer heard about our plight that we were released. The man reprimanded Emmanuel and Hamazat and ordered that we be released. Unfortunately for me, when I got to Ebute-Ero, I could no longer find my motorcycle. The motorcycle is not mine, I make returns daily to the owner. Now, I have to replace the missing motorcycle through no fault of my own,” Michael said.
Shigunlese, on the other hand, had already been assisted by kind passersby to a clinic where he received treatment for his wounds. Now, both men are demanding that Emmanuel and Hamazat be prosecuted for attempted murder and assault.
When CRIME DIGEST contacted the Police Public Relations Officer FSARS, Mr. Lekan Ogundare, he did not reply the text messages or calls made to his cell-phone.
