Speaking with journalists in Abuja on Thursday, the Deputy National Chairman of the party, Dr. Sam Jaja, said the numerical advantage of the PDP at the National Assembly must not be used in a negative form.
Jaja said, “I can assure you that the PDP as a political party will play its fatherly role by ensuring that the advantage of the party at the National Assembly is by no means seen as a disadvantage.
“The fatherly role will be used to smoothen rough edges in the relationship between the members of the party at the National Assembly and the Presidency.”
He denied the media reports that the intervention of the party had not produced any meaningful result.
Jaja added, “By the time the National Assembly returns from their recess, the nation shall witness a renewed cordial relationship between the arms of government the President is a product of the party and a majority of the members of the National Assembly are also products of the party.
“Whatever differences that might have happened amongst them, if any, are based on principle and not necessarily on conflict with democratic credendum.”
Jaja also elaborated on his early statement that the President had committed impeachable offences.
He said, “My statement was taken out of context. What I said and meant was that the difference between the National Assembly and the Executive over the implementation of the 2012 Budget should not be celebrated.
“I went further to say that people are over-bloating this issue. I couldn’t have said that His Excellency, Mr. President has committed impeachable offences when you and I know that he has not committed any.”
Meanwhile, youths from Niger Delta have appealed to the National Assembly not to impeach Jonathan.
The group, who spoke under the aegis of Niger Delta Youth Parliament, condemned the controversy surrounding the implementation of the 2012 national budget.
National Coordinator of the NDYP, Mr. Imoh Okoko, said in Port Harcourt on Thursday that the threat of impeachment against the President could further heat up the polity.
He said, “The National Assembly and the executive should embrace dialogue and see how the budget can be fully implemented. This is not the time to engage in a controversy that could distract government from achieving its objectives,” Okoko added.
He suggested that the Minister of Finance, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala should be sacked if she was the cause of the poor budget implementation.
