Though circumstances surrounding the incident are still unclear, LEADERSHIP gathered that the student had gone clubbing with his friend at MATE around PZ area of Zaria metropolis when he made his untimely death after a clash with the army officer.
Late Emmanue’s friend, Femi David, who witnessed the event that led to his friend’s death, narrated how attempts to broker peace between a lady and her boyfriend led to the untimely death of his friend.
He said, “My late friend and I went to MATE on Wednesday for a night club and at around 3 am on Thursday morning, we decided to leave the club. While on our way out of the club, we saw a man beating up a lady, so we went close to him and spoke to him politely and appealed to him to stop beating the lady.
“While we were appealing, a soldier suddenly came out from nowhere, accosted us and started asking us to keep quiet, that what was our business in the issue. Before I knew it, he slapped me; he was already drunk. Later again, he started beating my friend on his chest hard and even hit my late friend’s head on the ground.
“Even when we went into our car, the military man followed us and continued beating my friend. Before I could do anything, blood had started rushing from my friend’s head. It is like he hit my friend with a broken bottle. After then, we rushed my friend to the hospital where he later died,” he narrated.
But, when contacted, the Army Public Relations Officer in Zaria, Captain Ibrahim Abdullahi denied the claim, saying the civilian died in an accident away from the club.
He said, “It’s not true. What really happened is that the soldier was about to enter the club and the civilian was coming out and they bumped into each other. Then the soldier asked the civilian why he behaved as such, the civilian now became apprehensive.
“After everything, the boy went into a waiting car and as they were about to zoom off, the officer later was about to approach the civilian and the civilian zoomed off and had an accident 40 metres from the club. He was rushed to the hospital by his friend, but later died.”
The National Association of Nigerian Student (NANS), while confirming the incident, accused the soldier of causing the untimely death of the student.
A statement signed by the Secretary General of NANS, Zone ‘A’, Comrade Dominic Phili and the President of the Students’s Union Government (SUG), Nuhu Bamalli Polytechnic, Comrade Rilwan Mika’il, expressed sadness and total dismay over the killing of Emmanuel Fred (aka Papa), a HND I Public Administration student of the Polytechnic, around PZ area of Zaria metropolis by a Captain of the Nigerian Army on Thursday morning.
