The South African authorities have jailed a Nigerian man, Ekene Chukwu popularly known as KC for partaking in a recent armed robbery operation that took place some six months ago in Cape Town, South Africa.
According to the information at the disposal of our Correspondent in South Africa, Ekene Chukwu, an indigene of Anambra State, Nigeria, was arrested in Dunoon two weeks ago by the police detectives placed to mount a surveillance on him after a tip off by one of his accomplices
He was immediately taken to court today where he was sentenced to a six month imprisonment without an option of fine after pleading guilty to all the charges made against him.
According to South African Justice department, the accused person is not a first time offender and this was enough reason to imprison him without being given an option to pay a fine in lieu of his imprisonment.
The department further said that the accused person who got to South Africa in 2006 is a notorious criminal known to be selling hard drugs to people in Cape Town.
He was reportedly jailed for nine months a while ago for the possesion of hard drugs and he was asked to serve the jail term in Pollsmoor, the maximum prison where notorious criminals are kept in Cape Town.
According to the charge sheet obtained by our Correspondent, the police in the area had in January this year arrested a white man whose name is David but popularly known as Devil amongst his friends.
David who refused to mention the names of Ekene Chukwu and other accomplices of his that partook in the crime was charged for armed robbery and got a six month jail term in that same month of January, 2012..
The charge sheet further revealed that it was when David finished his jail term in the early days of August that he decided to tell the police that Ekene Chukwu was part of the crime that had landed him in jail for six months.
Asked by the police why he thought David also known as Devil decided to give him out to the police after spending his jail term, the Nigerian accused person, Ekene Chukwu said that David was furious when he did not meet his share of the loots they got from the operation.
He said that David was thinking that he would meet his share of the loot hence he decided not to mention his name in January as an accomplice in the dastardly crime.
During his arrest two weeks ago, Cape Town police found some hard drugs, guns that were possessed ilegally and a lot of stolen items.
Checks however revealed that Ekene Chukwu was arrested by South African immigration officials at the begining of this month for living in the country ilegally but was let off the hook by the police when they realised that he already has two kids and a wife in South Africa.
