Hayatou from Cameroon has been the CAF president since 1987. He revealed that if elected in the upcoming CAF elections next month, March, he will serve his last term. So far, he is the only person vying for the presidency of CAF.
The 66-year-old brought about rule changes that only allow members of the executive committee to stand. At the moment, Jacques Anouma, a member of FIFA’s executive committee but not CAF’s, wants to stand against Hayatou and is challenging the rule changes at the Court of Arbitration for Sport in Switzerland but FIFA President, Sepp Blatter said the world football body couldn’t intervene and had “nothing to say” about CAF’s rule changes.
Hayatou is also a member of the International Olympic Committee (IOC). On November 3, 2007, Hayatou was awarded an honorary degree from Ladoke Akintola University of Technology in Ogbomosho, Oyo State, Nigeria.
