Nemesis caught up with a father of three, Ugbobor Ozarzomaro Peter, from Isoko North Local Government Area of Delta State, for attempting to cash a fake N5 million cheque from the Rosicrucian Order at the United Bank for Africa (UBA) branch at Effurun near Warri. Luck ran out on the man as he was apprehended by security operatives attached to the bank.
Against all odds, Ugbobor, who possibly was full of confidence when he stepped into the bank, met a stone wall. Efforts by Sunday Sun to get the bank officials, including the Chief Security Officer, to speak on the incident was not successful as they all declined comments. Ugbobor, who claims to be a member of the International Society for Krishna Consciousness, Rosicrucian Order, a new generation church, and also a potential member of Eckankar, was said to have returned to the bank after initially withdrawing N5,000 from his own account, to draw the cheque worth Five million, five thousand naira(N5,005,000) only from the Rosicrucian Order account. But unknown to him, only N945 was available in the account.
Sunday Sun investigation further revealed that the cashier, who was suspicious of Ugbobor’s moves, raised the alarm which attracted both security operatives and workers, and the man was immediately apprehended and detained by the security outfit attached to the bank. On interrogation, the suspect told Sunday Sun that his family lives in Benin City, Edo State, and that he only goes to visit them during Christmas celebrations. Items found on him included some money, UBA passbook, Hare Krishna DVD, a blank Rosicrucian Order membership form, an Armorc welfare committee form of Request for Metaphysical Assistance.
Others were a sermon book, phone charger, a Nokia handset, a dirty white handkerchief and a wristwatch. Narrating his ordeal, Ugbobor said: “My name is Amuza Zumaro from Ewhen village in Oleh Local Government Area. I was given the cheque by a member of the Rosicrucian Order in Delta State. Somebody gave me a magazine of the Order, his name is Ezekiel, a security member there. I went there because of a problem. When I went to the temple, I realized they were not congregating. So, I saw a cheque of the Order in the magazine.
It was signed, but no amount was written on it. It was a signed blank cheque. So, I wrote just N5 million to pay into my account instead of withdrawing it. In fact, I’m confused now.” When asked how he was nabbed, the young man whose eyes had suffered teargas burns, said: “When I got here (UBA), I was a bit afraid, but I just decided to go ahead and do what I came to do. I gave the cheque to them at the counter. So, they detected that the cheque was fake and that I am a criminal. I was handed over to the police at the premises and I was flogged and tear-gassed. The suspect, who regretted that his family, particularly his children would not be happy to hear about his ordeal, said he had no job being in the Second Order of Krishna society, adding, “I don’t work. I’m a Hare Krishnan.
We stay in the Second Order for the management of the temple. We are not paid. We make money from distributing our books. But for some time now, we’ve not been doing that. So, I’m out to do some hustling. I only came to town today because of the cheque,” he said. When asked to surrender his life to Jesus as solution to his problem, he said “I’ve given my personal life to Christ that He should forgive me. I’m confessing my sins to Him to forgive me. He should cleanse me.” The suspect was later taken to Enerhen Police Station where he was detained and subjected to further interrogations for prosecution. When contacted, Area Commander of the Nigeria Police, Warri Zone, ACP Hussein Rabiu, said he was yet to be briefed on the matter.
