A murder investigation is underway in Spanaway after a 40-year-old man came into the Pierce County Jail and told officers that he had just shot and killed his wife and her daughter at home.
The news media reported that 41-year-old Kristi Holmes and 11-year-old Violet Holmes, were found dead this week, shot inside their home, on the 15500 block of 20 Avenue Court East. Their bodies were both in bed in the master bedroom.
A second child is in college, Captain Ed Smith with the Department of the Pierce County Sheriff, said.
Smith said the man, identified as Dean Holmes, arrived at the jail at 4:45 am and confessed to the killings. The police took him into custody for questioning. Since then he has been held in jail for investigation on two counts of first-degree murder.
According to information obtained by the Sheriff's Department, Holmes had been hiding financial problems from his wife, including lying about a home where they were supposed to move to.
Holmes told police he shot his wife in her sleep early Tuesday, and then woke his daughter and her friend who had slept that night, investigators said.
Police said Holmes had both children in his car, left the friend at her home in Auburn, and then drove around for some time with his daughter. Police said Holmes told detectives that he finally stopped at the roadside in Spanaway and shot his daughter while she was sitting in the car.
Then he went to a fast food restaurant in Spanaway, bought a meal for himself, and then went home and placed her daughter's body next to his wife.
After several hours of trying to clean his house and car, Holmes decided to surrender to the police, the Sheriff's Department said.
Detectives searched the house, but no weapon has been found.
Holmes is expected to appear in court at a later time.
