Mayhem was averted in Bukuru, Jos South Local Government Area of Plateau State when some officers of the National Security and Civil Defence Corps went berserk, shooting two people.

The two men identified as “Ali Abubakar, 25 years old, who was shot on his left leg and Ibrahim Abubakar, 30 years old was shot on his right arm. were said to be receiving treatment at the Air Force  Military Hospital in Jos.

Our correspondent gathered that the incident happened at about 1pm on Wednesday, when the men resisted attempts by officers of the NSCDC, who in company with the Jos City Renewal Task Force tried  to remove  some iron scraps on a piece  of land belonging to the victims’  family.

Secretary  of the elders committee in Bukuru, Bala Baba Mohammed, who witnessed the incident, said  the incident was the second of its kind as some gunmen had sometimes last year  killed about three people on the same spot.
He said that since then, the owners of the land have been under pressure to sell the land but they have refused.

Mohammed said, “So when the task force came with the civil defence to pack the scraps, we asked why we were not given notice and even the STF men around the place asked the same question. But a senior officer of the civil defence asked two of his officers to open fire if any one resisted and they shot two of our youths.”

When contacted, the Public Relations Officer of the NSCDC, Naomi Tishak, said she was not aware of any such incident.

However, the STF Media and Information Officer, Captain Salisu Mustapha, who confirmed the incident, explained  that “the Taskforce on city renewal were carrying out demolition exercise around the area and they faced some resistance in which the civil defence officers accompanying them shot two members of the community. ”
