A 41-year old French teacher, Slimane Salhi, went on trial on charges of ordering an acid attack on the former principal of the French Lycee in Lagos, Nigeria.

Now the man faces up to 20 years in prison if convicted of paying an unidentified man to carry out the 2010 attack, which disfigured the victim and blinded him in one eye.

Prosecutors in the Yonne department (where the victim originates from) allege that Salhi attacked the principal after he informed the French and Philosophy teacher that his contracts would not be renewed because of his irregular conduct.

For example, it included driving a car with unauthorised diplomatic plates and lending money to colleagues.

The court heard that 5 days before the attack, Salhi (originally from Roubaix in northern France) had thrown acid on the tyres of the principal’s car.

The defendant described the incident as a “practical joke” and said he had no animosity towards his boss.

He denies the charges against him. A verdict is due on Friday. - See more at: http://www.9aijahouse.com/2013/09/acid-attack-in-lagos-french-man-on-trial.html#sthash.DVeRzuUQ.dpuf
