A reckless bullion van driver, driving against traffic on Thursday, knocked down a woman in Abeokuta, the Ogun State Capital. The victim was later rushed to the hospital.
The incident occurred at Imo area of the town, and infuriated a mob; which almost led to the driver being lynched, but for the presence of police officers.
Sorces have learnt that after the driver, who was also said to be overspeeding, hit the woman, witnesses asked him to disembark from the vehicle. He refused.
It took the timely intervention of police officers attached to different banks located along the area to rescue the driver who was about to be forced out of his vehicle by the angry mob that had built up.
The mob was also prevented from damaging the vehicle by the police officers. The van had no police escort, an indication that there was no money in it.
Witnesses in the area blamed the driver for reckless driving. They said the victim was lucky to be alive.
