No fewer than 42 people were yesterday drowned in a boat mishap on River Niger close to Malilli village in Borgu Local Government Area of Niger when traders were returning from Malilli Village to Tunga Illo village, after the day’s market.

The boat which had over 150 passengers capsized midway and drowned 42 people, while 100 others were missing. Local divers helped in recovering the corpses and are still looking for more.  The Secretary to the State Government who confirmed the incident said; ''We believe that the boat was overloaded because the boat’s capacity was put at 60 passengers, but over 150 passengers were said to be on board during the incident. The debris in the swollen river may also have been responsible for the incident''

The recovered corpses would be given a mass burial close to the river bank, and neighboring villages have also been alerted to look out for floating corpses.

Most probably a boat made to carry only 20 people but trust Nigerians and wanting to treble their money - they carried overload!

When will we learn that life is more precious than money?

May their souls rest in peace.

Awareness is lacking seriously behind on the continent, government negligence against masses negligence is taking serious toll on our safety ,ppl don't have to die prematurely, life span is so short in Africa ,simply because we do not attached great values to lives,I mean this wouldn't happen elsewhere on earth beside Africa except intentional suicide or accident, the rate at which Africans lose their precious lives is such incomparable in figure to western death ratio. These are preventable causes ,but the lack of values for lives is biting seriously and great causes of premature death.

Taking to consideration the very preventable slight causes of death in Nigeria is beyond imagination,I found it hard to understand why a stable minded thinker would risk boarding overloaded canoe, considering lack of maritime safety ,poor state of emergency ,lack of rapid responsive rescue team, lack of mechanism that facilitate maritime security and many more factors to at least discourage risk taking, despite all of these I availability our ignorant ,unoriented people will smoke themselves in without initial negative doubt of incase or what if.We surely won't expect government responsibility or action in our poor organized society ,where nothing works systematically but primitively. Most causes of premature death in Africa is evitable, instead of admitting our negligence and lack of organization will rather attributes those death or misfortune with spiritual mystery.Africa my Africa .
