If you thought President Goodluck Jonathan had distanced himself from his now notorious declaration at a People’s Democratic Party (PDP) rally three years ago, then you have misjudged the man: he had no shoes when he went to primary school. That’s his story and he is sticking with it.

At least, going by the party’s rally in Anambra yesterday.

President Jonathan, who confessed he had cancelled a trip to attend the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in Colombo, Sri Lanka, to attend the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting “at the eleventh hour”, to make the rally, asked Anambra indigenes to vote and “push the state forward” in Saturday’s elections.

It was very clearly a boisterous afternoon, with the president announcing that his Vice President could not attend the rally because both men cannot be in the same location: “in case anything happens.”

Then he turned to billionaire businessman and PDP financier:

“From what Arthur Eze said, we (him and the gubernatorial candidate) have similar background: attended primary school without wearing slippers,” he said. “His own may even be better than my own,” he added.

That wasn’t all the President, arriving  two hours after the rally began at 10am did a small run-around across the venue of the rally before taking his sit.

“There are rumours that they are bringing people from outside to come and rig the election. Don’t listen to that kind of rumours,” he said to the crowd. “We believe in one man one vote, one woman one vote, one youth one vote,” Mr. Jonathan said.

By the way, Mr. Eze indicated he is ready to lay down his life for the PDP candidate, Tony Nwoye to win the elections this tomorrow.
