Chinese Rape Case: Nigerian victim under pressure to withdraw the case from court
to avoid a diplomatic row ...... Court awaits advice from justice ministry.....

November 22, 2013

The trial of the alleged attempted rape by two Chinese men of a 20-year-old Nigerian girl, Oluchi Chukwuemeka, was stalled on Thursday as the court said  it was waiting for response from the Directorate of Public Prosecution, Federal Ministry of Justice.

Our correspondent, however, learnt that the victim had been under pressure to withdraw the case from court to avoid a diplomatic row between Nigeria and China.
This had led to the matter being taken over by the Federal Ministry of Justice from Railway Police Command.

PUNCH Metro had reported on September 19 that Chen Gang and Zhao Weidong, both of Chinese nationality working with China Civil Engineering Construction Company, were arraigned at an Ebute Meta Magistrate’s Court in Lagos for attempted rape.

The victim, Chukwuemeka, was said to have screamed while Gang was struggling to undress her in the store room. Gang was Chukwuemeka’s boss in one of the departments of the company. Weidong was accused of allegedly taking the victim’s phone and throwing it in the toilet, thinking she recorded the act.
The men had been arraigned on seven counts of segxwal harassment indecent assault, perversion of justice and willful damage before they were admitted to bail.

As of October 17, when the matter was slated for trial, the court did not sit and the court registrar had to give a new date.
The victim was said to have drafted a withdrawal letter which was supposed to be presented to the court on the next adjourned date.

However, our correspondent learnt that some human rights groups rose up to ensure justice was served in the matter.

The case was said to have attracted the attention of the Federal Ministry of Justice which demanded the case file from the police.

On November 21 (Thursday), when the matter was brought to court, the magistrate, Mr. K.O Ogundare, said court processes must be suspended till the release of the DPP’s advice. “Since the matter has been taken for DPP’s advice, there is nothing I can do about it,” he said.

Present in court were the victim, the two defendants, the police prosecutor, Inspector Moses Uaedmuvbo, and the defence counsel.

The matter was adjourned till December 11.

It will be shameful if justice is not served in this case.
To hell with diplomatic “Row”….A lot of Nigerians are in jail in China…
These Chinese should also be jailed if found guilty….. then bargain later..

I am glad for the fact that this young lady did not succumb to these rapists ….  She is a great fighter…

We’ll see what happens….

I FEEL VERY SORRY FOR THE NIGERIAN STATE, WHEN NIGERIANS ARE HUMILIATED WORLDWIDE, NO ONE EVER THINKS OF CONSEQUENCES OF A DIPLOMATIC ROW WITH NIGERIA, RATHER INNOCENT HOLDERS OF THE NIGERIAN PASSPORTS ARE NOTORIOUSLY REJECTED, BANNED, DEPORTED, JAILED, KILLED AT WILL IN COUNTRIES ALL OVER THE WORLD WITHOUT RECOURSE.

NOW THIS IS A CLEAR CASE OF WRONG DOING, A RAPE CASE, WITH AMPLE EVIDENCE TO PROVE THE ACT AGAINST A NIGERIAN CITIZEN, AND THE LAW ENFORCEMENT AGENCY WANT TO PLAY "SERVANT" TO YET ANOTHER SLAVE MASTER FOR FEAR OF BEING BULLIED?

WHILE OTHERS (CHINA) WOULD SPARE NO ROD TO PROTECT THEIR OWN CITIZENS IN THEIR COUNTRY AND EVEN THOSE LIVING ABROAD, NIGERIA WILL RATHER GLADLY RELINQUISH ALL ITS INTEGRITY AND THE HONOUR OF ALL ITS CITIZENS LIVING WITHIN THE COUNTRY AND EVEN MORE HUMILIATED ARE THOSE LIVING ABROAD.

NIGERIA ISN'T A FAILING STATE, NIGERIA HAS ALREADY FAILED!

Well said. Can you imagine? It is a total failure…

You may recall on October 9, 2013, Nigerian government yesterday withdrew charges of unlawful importation of arms into the country levelled against 15 Russian sailors at the Federal High Court, Lagos while two Nigerians who had been aboard the ship had been charged with wrongfully telling the Russians they had permission to enter Nigerian territory with the weapons one of them is Stanley Chineye and his firm, Maritime Services Limited was filed.
The Russian Foreign Ministry welcomed the court verdict and said in a statement that it would help future bilateral ties.

Another case to watch which has just concluded about a month ago is that of three Lebanese-born men who are accused of terrorist-related activities associated with Hezbollah. A representative from the Lebanese embassy watched the proceedings from near the back of the courtroom.
The judge has not set a date to announce his verdict, but he said it will be soon.
