The FRSC  will  henceforth impound right hand drive cars  while their owners will be  prosecuted.

Godwin Ogagaoghene, the Oyo State Sector Commander, said this on Monday in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in  Ibadan.

Ogagaoghene, who  warned against taking the FRSC for granted, pointed out that "the law banning such vehicles from plying the nation’s roads is still enforceable."

He said that although right hand drive cars could be imported, they must not be driven in the same form.

“Henceforth, such cars are to be reverted immediately to the left or their owners stand to be prosecuted with their cars impounded.

“We will, however, compel apprehended owners to change over to the left in our office before their cars are released,” the sector commander said.

He also said the FRSC had mapped out strategies to reduce the rate of accidents and deaths on Nigerian roads in 2014.

“We will work round the clock in 2014 to ensure that the goal of having road traffic crashes reduced by 50 percent and fatality rate by another 15 percent  is realised," Ogagaoghene said.

Acknowledging that the FRSC could not do it alone, he solicited for the cooperation of other stakeholders in making the nation's roads safer.

NAN reports that 329 accidents occurred in the state in 2013, claiming  356 people and leaving 1 459 injured.
