It is the semi-finals of the Copa el Ray at Estadio Santiago Bernabéu — Madrid at 8pm today. It is also a massive derby clash we have as Real Madrid takes on Atletico Madrid. Incidentally, Atletico are the reigning champions after beating Real Madrid in last season’s final back in May so they will want to defend the title the last won coming up against Real Madrid in a repeat of last season's final.
Also Atletico Madrid will be hoping to repeat the 1-0 victory they managed at the Bernabeu when the sides met last September in La Liga, Real Madrid will have other ideas as they look to exact revenge for that defeat last time out. More importantly, Real Madrid do not want to lose three times in a row to Atletico Madrid, not in their own home ground especially!
It must be noted that this is the first of a two legged semi-finals and Atletico would be happy to come away with the draw and take the game back to the Vicente Calderon where they are so strong this season.
Atletico Madrid would come into this match in confident mood after going top of La Liga last weekend after both Barcelona and Real Madrid dropped points. No doubt the player to watch will be Diego Costa who has scored twenty goals this season and in theor last two La Liga games Atletico Madrid have scored a total of 8 goals. Brazilian Costa, who will be playing for Spain at the World Cup, is no doubt the player to watch for the visitors. He scored twice against Real Madrid in their last two meetings.
For the record, Real Madrid still dominate the past meetings as from 29 previous encounters, Atletico have taken just the five victories.
