ARSENAL FAN STABS LIVERPOOL FAN TO DEATH DUE TO 5 - 1 DEFEAT ; A fan of English premier league team Liverpool was stabbed to death, allegedly by an Arsenal supporter, as they watched their weekend match on television at a bar in Meru County, eastern Kenya.
Liverpool hammered Arsenal 5-1, a result that sparked a fierce argument between two fans watching the game at Marete’s Bar in the Makutano area of the county.
Anthony Muteithia, the Liverpool supporter, was stabbed and died while being treated.
Area police boss Tom Odero confirmed the incident, but said police were yet to establish the motive behind the attack.
Witnesses, however, said the argument was sparked by the game they had been watching, which was effectively over as a contest by the 20th minute as Liverpool led 4-0.
“The assailant managed to escape but wananchi (Kiswahili for the public) brought down a motorbike he was seen riding on. We have launched a manhunt for him,” said Odero.
The motorcycle was being held at the Meru police station.
On December 8 last year, a young man believed to be a Manchester United fan committed suicide in Nairobi’s Pipeline estate after the team unexpectedly lost 1-0 to Newcastle.
Jimmy Macharia, 23, is said to have jumped from the seventh floor of a building after learning that his slumping team had lost the match.
In May 2012, an Arsenal fan, Suleiman Alfonso Omondi, 29, also committed suicide after his team lost. His body was found dangling on a rope in his house in Nairobi’s Pipeline estate.
At the time, the London club sent its condolences to Omondi’s family through its spokeswoman, Katie Baldwin.
In another incident on September 9, 2011, an Arsenal fan was stabbed to death by a rare Blackburn Rovers supporter during an argument in Kapkatet, Nandi North after the Gunners lost 4-3 to Blackburn in a premier league match.
