An Abuja Chief Magistrates’ Court on Monday sentenced 14 unemployed men to one week in prison each for constituting public nuisance.

They are Anaku Solom, 25; Ikenna Ikpegbaru, 28; Samuel Agbu,24; Moses Avosi, 22; Samuel Iti,23 and Mathew Joseph, 19.

Others are Joshua Single, 22; Friday Aduku, 29; Rabiu Abdullahi, 21; Bello Abubakar,21; Mode Umar,20; Sheku Mohare,21; Kenneth Daniel, 25 and David Udoh, 27.

The 14 men, who had no fixed address, were sentenced by Senior Magistrate Abdullahi Illelah, after pleading guilty to the offence and prayed for leniency.

The magistrate, however, gave each of them an option to pay N1,000 fine.

Illelah said although the convicts had pleaded for leniency, they must be punished to serve as a deterrent to others.

Earlier, the prosecutor, Cpl. Simon Emmanuel, had told the court that a team of police detectives attached to the Life Camp Police Station, Abuja, arrested the men on March 6.

He said that the team, led by John Esim, arrested them during patrol in the Life Camp area of the FCT.

Emmanuel added that the convicts were arrested wandering about in a criminal hideout and black spots, smoking Indian hemp and other hard drugs.

The prosecutor said that the men could not give satisfactory account of what they were doing there.

He added that the offence contravened the provisions of Section 198 of the Penal Code.

The section states that whoever constitutes public nuisance in any case not otherwise punishable by this code, shall be punished with imprisonment for one year or with fine or with both.
