The head of the company that owned the South Korean ferry that sank on April 16th is detained on possible charges that include manslaughter and breaking the maritime law.
According to recent news, the head of the company that owned the ferry that sank last month, is being prosecuted facing several possible charges including manslaughter and breaking the maritime law.
According to the investigators, the ferry was deliberately overloaded with cargo that was probably the reason why the boat capsized. They say that the vessel was to carry at least three times less than what was on board.
Kim Han-sik, 72-year-old head of company Chonghaejin Marine, was arrested on Thursday morning. He told to the media: "I apologise to the victims and the families."
The tragedy happened with Sewol ferry on April 16th, 2014, when it was on its way from Incheon to Jeju island carrying 476 people on board. Out of them, only 172 were saved, while others got trapped inside the vessel that turned over and gradually went down.
Over 300 passengers on board were high school students who were on their trip to Jeju island with their teachers.
The captain of the vessel, who was among the first ones who escaped the ferry, was arrested shortly after the tragedy happened.
14 crew members that also failed to help the passengers were arrested as well.
This tragedy caused shock not only in South Korea, but all over the world. The Prime Minister of South Korea, Chung Hong-won resigned due to criticism of how the government handled the tragedy.
