Samsung’s new Galaxy S5 smartphone was welcomed with water resistance feature and indeed many of us might be thinking if Samsung could do something a step further. And fortunately, AT&T is now offering a more rugged version of the flagship for that demographic aptly named the Galaxy S5 Active.
The phone is virtually identical to the original internally with a 5.1-inch Super AMOLED display, quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 SoC operating at 2.5GHz, 2GB of RAM, a 16-megapixel camera and so on. In addition to the IP67 water- and dustproof rating, Galaxy S5 Active comes with US Mil-STD 810G for shock, temperature, humidity, rain and altitude.
The chassis is a bit beefier with the addition of shock protection. And there is also a new button kept on the side of the phone and Samsung calls it the convenience key. It will let you have quick access to the handset’s apps relating to outdoor activity.
Samsung Galaxy S5′s IP67 certification which means that it is its resistant against dust and water has now come up with Galaxy S5 Active which could be unnecessary feature for some users, but, it claims to be robust than its predecessor.
Also, there are some sacrifices made, most notably, the built-in fingerprint sensor has been excluded. Well, that might not offend users as it wasn’t of a big hit considering how stubborn it is to operate. As per the recent review from TechSpot, that feature was both frustrating and cumbersome.
“Samsung Galaxy S5 Active is built to handle the wear and tear of an active lifestyle, while still maintaining the level of performance customers expect from a premium smartphone,” Jeff Bradley, senior vice president of devices at AT&T, said in a statement.
US network AT&T has launched the Samsung’s Galaxy S5 Active on Friday announcing that it is available from the very day and is priced $199 with a two year contract or $714.99 sans contract in a fetching “Camo Green” flavour.
The phone is also eligible for AT&T’s Next installment plan over the course of 12 or 18 months. And if you are opting to that route, be ready to pay an additional $35.75 each month with the 12-month plan or $27.50 every billing cycle if stretched over 18 months.
