Gunmen kill 13 Fulani herdsmen in Taraba

13 Fulani herdsmen were killed in Taraba by a group of unknown gunmen on June 28, 2014, Saturday, NAN reports.

According to a statement by the police in the state’s capital, Jalingo, on June 29, 2014, Sunday, the deceased were returning from village markets in Maihula and Garba-Chede.

The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) ASP Joseph Kwaji said the herdsmen were ambushed and killed by a group of yet-to-be identified armed youths. The incident happened along a bush path in the outskirts of Maihula in Bali Local Government Area of Taraba.

The PPRO said the security was beefed up in the area. The officer promised police would do its best to locate and arrest the attackers.

The motives of the ambush were also not clear to the police, but further investigations may reveal both the reasons for the attack and the people behind it.

Bali LGA Chairman, Andrew Yerima, confirmed the development. He noted that the perished herdsmen, but were trailed and gunned down by unknown hoodlums, have allegedly gone to Garba-Chede market to sell their cows.

The chairman urged for calm, warned the residents against taking the law into their hands. He also assured the local people that the culprits would be found and prosecuted.

It would be added that Taraba has been the arena of socio-ethnic and ethno-religious clashes for years. Fulani herdsmen, who are believed to be behind many of them, are often accused of being a part of Boko Haram sect. However, this time, the herdsmen became the victims themselves.
