Eye witnesses said no fewer than 15 people sustained injuries and had been taken to hospitals by officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC).
An eye witness told NAN that the accident occurred at about 3:45 p.m. when the driver of a commercial articulated vehicle lost control of it.
“The lorry rammed into several cars while descending from Kugbo Hill. It damaged several cars and injured some hawkers on the road,” the witness said.
A correspondent of NAN who was at the scene of the incident saw a corpse wrapped in white shroud preparatory for burial according to Islamic rites.
The accident had caused a traffic build-up on the route which has become infamous for gridlocks and ghastly accidents.
Less than 24 hours before the accident on Saturday, commuters had endured a harrowing gridlock on Friday on the route due to a similar accident.
In its bid to forestall ghastly accidents on the route, the FCTA authorities banned movement of heavy vehicles at peak periods.
However, regular commuters on the route have complained that the restriction had often been flouted and called for strict law enforcement by the authorities.
An SMS issued shortly after 5:00 p.m. on Saturday by the FCT Sector Command of the FRSC advised members of the public to avoid going to Kugbo from Abacha barracks.
It said FRSC and other stakeholders were making efforts to clear the road in the next two hours.
