The White House has shifted into “crisis mode” over Ebola amid growing fears of wider transmission after two health-care workers were diagnosed with the deadly disease.

Just three weeks ahead of midterm elections, President Barack Obama is facing pointed questions from lawmakers about the way his administration has responded to Ebola.

There is a growing concern about the spread of Ebola in the United States after two health workers involved in the treatment of Thomas Eric Duncan, a Liberian and the first Ebola patient in the US, were also diagnosed with the virus.

Republican lawmakers, including US House Speaker John Boehner, have criticized the Obama administration for its handling of the disease.

They have called for travel bans for Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone, the three African nations most affected by the Ebola epidemic.

“We need to protect the American people, first and foremost,” said Rep. Fred Upton, (R, Mich.), at a hearing by a House Energy and Commerce subcommittee. “People’s lives are at stake, and the response so far has been unacceptable.”

The White House responded by canceling two days of planned campaign events, but has ruled out a travel ban.

More than 8,900 people have been infected by the Ebola virus and 4,500 have died so far in West Africa.

The World Health Organization (WHO) said Thursday that the number of Ebola infections in West Africa is doubling every four weeks despite efforts to stop its spread.

A computer simulation of the Ebola outbreak has estimated that as many as two dozen people could be infected in the US by the end of the month.

There is currently no known cure for Ebola, which is a form of hemorrhagic fever with diarrhea, vomiting and bleeding as its symptoms.
