There are ongoing plans by the federal government to place a nationwide ban on the use of motorcycles for commercial means of transport, popularly known as Okada.

This was contained in a proposal submitted by the National Council on Transport after its annual conference in Enugu State and endorsed by the Minister of Transport, Sen. Idris Umar.

A statement from the Federal Ministry of Transport last night noted that the ban of commercial motorcycle was one of the measures proposed towards adequate provision of safety and secure transportation in the country.

The council called on all states in the federation to henceforth discourage the use of commercial motorcycles as a means of public transportation.

“All states and the Federal Capital Territory have therefore been advised to establish a public transport system that ensure strict regulation of the operation of public passenger transportation system through a well-articulated management system for enhanced safety, security, effective and efficient service delivery”, the statement said.

It added, “The states are to also develop master plans for the development of intelligent transport system to facilitate the development and management of their transport operations in line with emerging trends and global best practices.”

The statement noted that the council also agreed that all commercial vehicles should be properly registered in each state while their enumeration should be carried out periodically to enhance safety and security.

GISTMANIA recalls that Lagos State governor, Babatunde Raji Fashola had earlier made a similar pronouncement but the decision was latter rescinded.

And what ALTERNATIVE JOB will the goverment offer these people who ate working to feed their families? Does the government understand by the ban they are CREATING a larger UNEMPLOYED population? What do they want these people to do now? They are talking about SAFETY on our roads. The people RESPONSIBLE for making our roads UNSAFE are the NIGERIA POLICE who have NO reason to be on our roads anyway! If they stopped blocking the free movement of vechiles with their UNAUTHORISED  ROAD BLOCKS - traffic would flow better. And more importantly, drivers and bike riders will not feel pressurised to have to SPEED in order to make more money to HAND OVER TO THE NIGERIA POLICE!

In as much as I will want that to happen,we should be careful on the decisions we make.A lot of employed people have taken to that as a means of livelihood, what happens to them?
Secondly they make transportation to all those nooks and crannies easier. So how are we going to augment for that?
