Drug abuse is common among youths and students. An NGO has however revealed that students of faith-based universities are the main culprits.
Undergraduates in Nigerian faith based universities are most guilty of illicit drug use according to the Coordinator of the Christ Against Drug Abuse (CADAM), a Christian non-government Organisation, Dr. Dokun Adedeji.
Delivering a lecture on the topic: "Challenges of the Growing use and Abuse of Drugs in Tertiary Institutions" on the occasion of the 2014 Bells University Parents Forum, Adedeji said drug abuse is a global challenge.
He fingered students of faith based universities as the major culprits.
"Even, our universities, particularly the Christian ones, are not spared as investigations have revealed that more students in our higher institutions are fast joining the drug train-smoking away their future for the pleasure of getting high," Adedeji said
According to him, a drug is any chemical product other than food or water, which affects the way people think, feel, see and behave.
Adedeji said that the non-medical consumption is what is inappropriate and can affect the abuser socially, cognitively or physically.
He added that the abuse of drugs, considered cool by most students, can lead to a ""steady decline in academic performance, frequently fail to attend classes, lose interest in school work and display weakened motor coordination, poor health and a lack of interest in old friendships".
Concluding, Adedeji urged stakeholders in the education sector to fill the gap where the government has not reached in the fight again drug abuse.
It will be recalled that a 21-year old undergraduate student of the Redeemer's University (RUN), Ogun, who butchered his father blamed his action on the influence of drugs.
