A heartbroken civil servant Mr. Chibuzor Awobi, had died in Imo state after he took some poisonous substance because the family of his girlfriend refused his proposal to marry her.
Until his death, 36-year-old Awobi worked with the State Ministry of Internal Resources and Pensions.
It was alleged that Awobi killed himself after the parents and brothers of his fiancée, a certain Chioma Agukpaha from Ihitte Emeabiam community of the state refused giving their consent for him to marry her, Pulse NG reports.
It was learnt that the deceased had spent quite much including sponsoring the girl in higher institution after which he helped her get a job with Diamond Bank in Owerri.
However, things went sour when Awobi went to the girl’s family to officially seek her hand in marriage.The family were said have refused at first but later agreed and he performed the traditional rites and fixed the traditional wedding for Sunday, December 28, 2014 and the white wedding for Saturday January 3, 2015 at the Emmanuel Anglican Church Nekede.
Agukpaha was reportedly kidnapped by a relative of hers three days to the traditional wedding and released on Monday, December 29, 2014.
Awobi filed a report to the police who arrested the suspect, a development which even deepened the fight between him and the family who told him to either bail the suspect or forget the marriage.
Just forpeace to reign, Awobi bailed the relative but the family refused to give out their daughter to him in marriage.
Following the disappointment, Awobi reportedly poisoned himself although some family members claim he only slumped and died due to heartbreak.
