Main opponent of the incumbent President Goodluck Jonathan in the presidential race, Muhammadu Buhari, has refused to take part in the presidential debates proposed by Channels TV.

The unexpected refusal obviously confused Nigerians who support Buhari and provided the rest with a topic for a heated discussion. Naijapals.com has researched social networks to find out what Nigerians think about this latest twist.

The topic has quickly gone viral on Twitter. What prevails in the majority of comments is disappointment: withdrawal from debates was not the kind of behavior Nigerians expect from a man who is running for Presidency.

A lot of assumptions have been made concerning the reason of Buhari’s withdrawal from the debates. According to most popular speculations, Buhari’s proficiency in English could be too low to shine in real-life conversation.

Nevertheless, supporters are also trying to justify Buhari’s behavior.

However, some users are convinced that the message one tries to convey is more important than the manner it is conveyed in. Buhari’s supporters say they didn’t need Buhari’s perfect English pronunciation, but a reassurance that their leader would be able to represent them anywhere.

Most reactions accompanying Buhari’s unwillingness to participate in presidential debates are condemning in nature. However, some users have made a sarcastic assumption that it may be a perfect opportunity for Goodluck Jonathan to win the debates as his main opponent will not take part in it.

Probably, for those, who have already made their minds, Buhari’s refusal to take part in the debates is of little importance. However, no one would deny that these debates could have been one more wonderful opportunity for Buhari to demonstrate his ability to stand tall regardless of what it takes to him. Whether this refusal would cost Buhari  his victory or not, we’ll find out in less than two weeks.
