Fatai Adebola who until his death lived at 2 D.J. Close, Agbede Owutu, Ikorodu, a suburb of Lagos, had been caught on several occasions trying to commit suicide but his wife, Mrs. Olubunmi Adebola and other family members had always pleaded with him to desist from the act. He was said to have complained that it was better to be dead than to be half alive and that he could no longer endure the paralysis caused by the stroke that had defied medical solution.
He eventually hanged himself from the ceiling of his room when his wife and all other neighbours were away. Police sources confirmed that he used a new rope to hang himself after locking the door. Deputy Police Public Relations Officer Mr. Onyeisi Nwaolai who confirmed the incident maintained that suicide is a criminal offence and that the case had been transferred to the state CID for investigation pending the outcome of autopsy on the deceased.
