DANCE DEAL FOUNDATION GRADUATES STUDENTS

As part of its efforts to keep faith with its vision to create a haven for dance in Nigeria, a place where young talented individuals gifted with the art of dance will be discovered, motivated, groomed and empowered, the Dance Deal Training Foundation have sent off the 5th set of trained and qualified dancers.
At the foundation, young individuals have received world-class instruction since the foundation began in 2009. These aspiring dancers study at the Eric Moore home in Surulere, Lagos, where students learn diverse curriculum ranging from ballet, jazz contemporary, hip-hip, indigenous traditional dance, latin and ballroom to art of choreography.

Speaking during its 3rd graduation ceremony, Bimbo Obafunwa, Director, Dance Deal Training Foundation said the program has graduated 5 sets of professionals, amounting to over 170 people, some of whom have become top dance artistes, instructors and even choreographers in the country thereby empowering them to be part of several productions in and out of the country.
He mentioned that examples of such productions include the Maltina Dance All, Saro the musical, Kakadu the musical, Calabar festival amongst others, while others have established and run dance companies of their own.

According to him, “Some of these students have also been granted international scholarships, through the support of Corporate Dance World; they have gone to Germany and should be at the impulztanz festival in Austrai by the 3rd quarter of 2015.”
“It is our dream to see another young individual realize the power in the art form they possess and see this in turn affect positively the society we live in. This for us is what empowerment is about,” Obafunwa added.

He however solicited for support from well meaning organizations and individuals to procure more facilities and equipments and build a better place where dance lessons and performance will take place, since the dance lessons are taught for free.

Speaking at the event, Gloria Ohiri, one of the past students from the dance foundation, who now owns her dance company and a costume company disclosed that while she was in the foundation, she did not only learn how to dance but learnt dance as a business.
According to Ohiri, “The foundation taught me to put myself in a position, where people see me as a professional dancer and that wherever I go, I should look responsible and powerful. Today, I teach secondary school students dance as well as artists and I get paid for my services.”
Olakunle Fashina, the best graduating student from the last set said he was dedicated and hardworking to have emerged as the best, as sometimes he could not even afford transport fare to go for classes.

“The different instructors I met expanded the scope of my knowledge on dance and improved on my skills of dancing. Going from this foundation, I will love to be the best chorographers in the world and take dance in Nigeria from where it is to the international level,” Fashina revealed.
