Victor Agbafe,17, at Cape Fear Academy in Wilmington was accepted into 14 colleges, including all eight Ivy League Schools.
Just hours before taking the court as a member of his school's basketball team, Agbafe heard that Harvard had made a decision about his application. Instead of finding out right then if he was in or not, Agbafe decided to wait until after the game.
“I owed it my teammates to be focused there,” Agbafe said. “I didn't want to get too low on myself if I didn't get in. I also didn't want to get too high if I was accepted.”
After the game, he found out he was accepted at Harvard. He later received acceptance letters from the other seven Ivy League schools and six other top-tier schools like Stanford and Duke.
Victor credits his mother, Physician Dorothy Agbafe-Mosley, with exemplifying hard work and sacrifice.
“For God to crown his effort with success is just something that is just beyond me,” Agbafe-Mosley said. “I am very happy that he has all these choices to make. But then it also makes it difficult because it's a lot of good schools. A lot of good schools.”
Agbafe will visit as many campuses as he can in the next several weeks before picking one later this month.
He plans to double major in microbiology along with government or economics with the goal of becoming a neurosurgeon.
