Magistrate’s court in Yelwa, Bauchi State, has sentenced a 25-year-old man, Ya’u Ismaila, to six months imprisonment for acquiring multiple Permanent Voter Cards, PVCs.

According to the First Information Report (FIR) presented before the court by police prosecutor, Inspector Zakka Ayi, the convict was arrested around noon on the day of the presidential and national assembly election at a military check point by Rafin Makaranta, on Ningi Road, Bauchi with three different PVCs bearing three different names.

The PVCs belonged to the convict, who registered for them under different names, but with the same picture.

The police prosecutor told the court that the PVCs bore the names: Yau Ismail, Koyabi Kela Bason and Ismail Koyabi, adding that Ismaila registered at Fadanan Bayak Jahun and Jaja quarters with his photograph appearing on the voter’s cards.

“The offence committed by Ismaila is contrary to Section 129 (c) and (d) of the Electoral Act 2010 (as amended)”, Inspector Ayi said.

The accused pleaded guilty to the charges.

Ruling on the matter, the Presiding Magistrate, Kasimu M. Mohammed, stated that for admitting to the charges brought against him without wasting the time of the court, he would be lenient to the accused.

“Upon the facts before this court and the nature of the offence, the voluntary admission of guilt by the accused, I can only be lenient to you since you admit guilt instantly without wasting the energy of this court. The accused is hereby sentenced to six months in jail or option of N100,000 fine”, Magistrate Mohammed said.
