One of the suspected killers of Prof Albert Ilemobade, ex-Vice Chancellor of Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA), Olayemi Bamitale Monday said he was prepared to pay the supreme sacrifice for the murder of the professor of vetinary medicine.
Bamitale, who was paraded alongside his accomplice, Daniel Ita by the Ondo State Police Commissioner, Mr Isaac Eke, said he knew that “the wages of sin is death” and since he is guilty of the death of the 79-year-old professor, he is ready to face the consequence, which he said is death,
The 36-year old suspect admitted that he was the one that strangled Prof Ilemobade in the night of last week Sunday; but blamed it on the security man, Daniel Ita, whom he said mooted the idea that they could make money if they stole the car belonging to the late professor.
Bamitale, who spoke in Yoruba, said he was at home in Ado-Ekiti, Ekiti State when Daniel called him that they could make money by stealing the car belonging to Prof Ilemobade.
His words: “When he called me, I said I had no money but he said I should come that he would pay for my transport when I got to Akure. He came to meet me at Obanla junction and gave me N1, 000 to pay for my transport. He said I should meet him at Papa’s house at Ijapo by 9pm because I had worked there before as a driver.
“When I got there he told me that he had gone to his herbalist that said if he wanted to steal the car, they should kill the man. He told me that the herbalist said he should bring the sand of the house so that there would not be any problem after that. I asked him that the man had slept, how would he come out?
“He said he would say there is a power surge in the house and once he comes out, we will strangle him. True to his word, he went to the window of the man and told him that there was electricity sparking in the security post. The man came out through the kitchen door and we killed him. He now suggested that we should take him to car park. We now dragged him there so that we could enter the house.
“We now went inside his room and saw the key to the car; we took it with two bags, N7, 000, two handsets, one laptop computer and one ipad. We now left the house and he now locked the gate from outside. When we wanted to leave the estate, we saw the security and when they saw him, they asked us to leave.”
Bamitale said an argument ensued between them where they should sell the car and it was later agreed between them that they should go to Lagos where they could find buyer for it. He said it was in the process of looking for buyer that they were caught by the policemen.
However, Ita said it was Bamitale that came up with the idea that they should steal the car because he had stolen a car before. He said if they could steal the car successfully, they would be able to raise enough me to start business of their own.
His words: “He said this one will succeed and the best way to make it succeed is to kill my boss. I refused. I said he can steal money; he can tie him down but not to kill him. I told him that since I was born, I have never killed anybody. He insisted that if we did not kill the man, he would trace us. I now agreed with him. But he said he had no money for transport. I promised to give him transport money. It after 9pm that he called me and I came out to meet him, he insisted that we must kill the man for us to succeed.
“He told me to call the man out, I stood at his window and I told him about the electricity spark. When he came out and I was showing him the place, he came out and strangled him. He said we should put the body in the store beside the car park and that they would not see him there. He said he has been doing that before as this is not the first deal he was engaging in.”
Ita said it was after the death that he went to Prof Ilemobade’s room to remove the key, took the money before they fled. He added that it was in the process of trying to sell the car that the policemen in Ogun State arrested them.
The Ondo State Police Commissioner, Mr Isaac Eke said the command received information from their Ogun State counterparts that the professor’s night guard, one Daniel Ita and his former driver, Olayemi Bamital had been arrested with the Professor’s vehicle, a red Toyota Rav 4 Jeep with No. GGE-589-CF in an operation led by ACP Mudasiru Abdullah, Area Commander Ijebu Ode.
