Police in Abia State have paraded a retired pastor of one of the Pentecostal churches and his wife for allegedly stealing a one-yearold child. The retired pastor, Chima Egbochiogum, and his wife, Ugo, according the Abia State Police Commissioner, Habila Joshak, were apprehended when the real mother of the child raised the alarm over the disappearance of her child.

The 71-year-old retired pastor hails from Abiriba in Ohafia Local Government Area of the state. Speaking in Umuahia while parading the suspects, Joshak said the arrests were part of the achievements of his command in August. The commissioner said that a month ago, a 21-yearold pregnant mother was said to have lost her 11-month-old baby to a supposed friend under the pretence of offering help to her.

He added that luck, however, ran out on the supposed friend identified as Ekwutosi when the police anti-robbery squad at Owerrinta intercepted him for trafficking pregnant girls to Port Harcourt. Joshak said this led to the discovery of the child stolen from Aba and sold to the pastor’s wife who never told her husband about the deal.

The commissioner said that the suspect had sold the baby for N500,000 to the pastor’s wife, who told her husband that she went through the normal process of adoption of the baby. The pastor’s wife admitted to have paid for the baby on the premises of the Federal Medical Centre (FMC) in Umuahia, through a friend, Maria Mba who is a senior civil servant in Bende Local Government Area.
