Residents of Kaduna are experiencing an unprecedented flood as Kaduna River overran its bank after a torrential rainfall and submerged nearly 30,000 houses. According to Reporter, millions of people have been rendered homeless by the flood.
The Executive Secretary, State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), Mr. Ezekiel Baba Karick said at least one person was alleged to have lost his life in the flood with the agency making frantic efforts to rescue those that have been trapped inside the water.

The most affected places include Kabala Costain, Ungwan Rimi, Kigo  road and other residents residing along the river bank. Residents of
most places affected were seen evacuating some of their personal belongings which they could salvage while others completely lost their property.
The rain which started in the early hours of Saturday continued through Sunday and early Monday morning just as the river overflowed its bank and sacked many people residing close to it, a situation that has not been experienced in recent times.
Residents of Barnawa, a densely populated area in Kaduna South has as a result of the flood been completely cut off from the rest of the town as the flood has taken over the major road leading to Kaduna metropolis, thereby causing unprecedented gridlock, while commercial drivers had to take
alternative roads to the town.

Most people who spoke with our reporter said they had not experienced such flood in recent times, stressing that many areas that had not experienced it before were adversely affected, forcing people to take refuge at nearby neighbours, hoping that the water would subside for
them to return back to their homes.
Some schools that were affected by the flood have closed activities pending when the water would give way for students to continue
with their lectures, while some communities have been completely
deserted as a result of the flood.
As of the time of filing this report, it could not be ascertained the number of houses affected but it is believed that many people have been rendered homeless while property and farmlands worth millions of naira have been destroyed.
The level of the water appears to be on the increase and there is the likelihood that more residents would be affected by the flood.
Mr Karick called on residents to remain calm as the state agency was moving round to ensure that safety of lives and property was guaranteed.
