Igbo leaders in Oyo State under the auspices of Igbo General Assembly, IGA, yesterday, called for stiffer sanctions against any individual who continues to violate the directives of the South East Council of Traditional Rulers and the Ohanaeze Ndigbo on the title of Eze Ndigbo in Diaspora.

It would be recalled that the South East Council of Traditional Rulers and the Ohanaeze Ndigbo, while abolishing the title of Eze Ndigbo in Diaspora, had declared that ‘Eze’ remains the exclusive royal titles of kings in autonomous communities and kingdoms in Igbo land.

President General of IGA, Nze Emeka Enwereonye, while addressing journalists in Ibadan, expressed disappointment on the continued use of Eze Ndigbo title outside Igboland since the title was abolished.

He said rather than the use of Eze Ndigbo, South East Traditional Council and the Ohanaeze had approved the title Onyendu (Igbo community leader) in their respective host community and wondered why some title hungry individuals would continue to embarrass the Igbo people.

Enwereonye said Igbo people would not like a repeat of the ugly development between the Deji of Akure and Igbo people in the state, saying people would have been saved from embarrassment if they had abided with the directives on the Eze Ndigbo title.

Igbo leaders, who took turn to speak at the press conference, described the behaviour of some individuals who continued to parade themselves as Eze Ndigbo as unbecoming.

They called on the authorities, especially traditional rulers in host communities to impose stiffer sanctions on such recalcitrant individual, adding that there can be no king without a kingdom.

I support that nothing like Eze Ndi Igbo outside Igbo land. You can't rule a kingdom in another tribe kingdom. If any Igbo organisation outside Igbo land should have a leader, the leader can only be address as a Chairman nothing more or less.
