Lara Odoffin, a Nigerian living in the UK had her job offer revoked because of her hair. She was told that her braids were not part of the ‘uniform’
The Bournemouth University graduate Lara Odoffin wrote about the discrimination she had faced in a post on Facebook yesterday and was astonished when it quickly went viral and was shared 3,000 times.
She also posted a picture of the email she had received from the company, which read: ‘Unfortunately we cannot accept braids – it is simply part of the uniform and grooming requirements we get from our clients.
‘If you are unable to take them out I unfortunately won’t be able to offer you any work.’
In her own post, she wrote: ‘So after being accepted for a position within this company, they have TAKEN BACK the offer of a position on the grounds that if I do not take my braids out.
‘Naturally I simply cannot work for the company.
‘This type of discrimination should not still be happening in this day and age and any establishment still condoning such practices deserve to be shamed and criticised.
‘Being a black woman means that to have a long term hairstyle that stays neat is always going to be a problem.
‘Having braids that last for 2-4 months and can be packed neatly and styled to however a workplace requires is the solution to this problem.
‘No workplace has any right to forbid you from this.”

If she WANTS the job she will accept the dress code. In the UK nurses are NOT allowed to have multu coloured hair (real or fake). Teachers are not permitted to expose tattoos in classrooms. Every job has its etiquette. Her hair is not her real hair - she can restyle it to a acceptable one!
The choice she makes will show her maturity or otherwise!

Lara,I understand you&that it is your choice, but pls this is not your family company where you can do as you like, pls there is nothing wrong with you loosing ur braids&pack it to the style the company wants beside this your braids is bigger than your body, believe ur natural hair will be better. This is not descrimination as you call it,its just the rule of the company which has no exemption.

This Winace Woman sef, Have you lived in UK? You just dey say job plenty for UK as if na you dey there dey see all the jobs as e plenty. People should say what they are sure of, if you do not know about something it would be more honourable not to pass a comment. To comment is not a must.

This is so discriminatory, I like Lara for taking the stand! How dare them ask our black sisters to be shaving off their dreads and stuff because of some stupid dressing code! that is just so greedy on the part of the employers, if there is no job they should have said it, not using some old school slavery method to be controlling black peoples mind! Becky got a job at that company did they ask her to shave her blondie?

It's discrimination and she has a right to sue dem... Reminds me of a case of a muslim woman wey wear hijab over head and dem sack bcos of dat and she took dem to court and won and it was a hair dressing salon job... So dere's a precedent set on dat she go win... For d fact say dem write am to confirm mean say dem break d rule... But wat kind of job are we looking at here...?
