Twins are a rare gem! Science tries to explain the mystery behind it; save it, lay men aren’t interested. It’s an enviable gift from God. What would you say then of a noble double, "Twins by Brain?" The Novena University Twins who both made tower scaling first class share their story. (A story for everyone).
The " Novena Twins" are a rare and enviable team who side by side achieved the honours of Valedictorian and Second Best in their University.
The journey from obscure for them was typical of rigor and fierce determination. Both Mass Communication graduates of Novena University, Miss Beulah Onoriode and Miss Precious Onoriode stood out of the 571 graduates of the 2015 academic session with CGPA at 4.90 and 4.85 respectively.
The Nigerian born duo come from a nearly average Christian family in Delta State. Knowing their financial status, they set their minds to make their parents proud. Bagged with innumerable talents, their determination had to rise above mere dreaming, becoming realistic and positive both in their studies and how the real world works.
HURDLES AND CHALLENGES
Admission.
Prior admission into Novena, Beulah narrates the unpalatable situation she was faced with. "Apart from the admission battle into DELSU where 45,000 lost, I was suffering from PTSD and Depression and thus I needed a miracle. First, to get into a private University and then to get an on-campus nurse for me. Hence, I requested my "twin" to be both student and nurse which meant my parents ‘bleeding’ more money for the both of us".
RESUMPTION
"First, it was culture shock for us, as a result of being among the wealthy. The class difference posed a huge challenge; hence it was not easy for us to adjust. Apart from that, was the mockery we had to face every day and you know, how bullying works against any form of positivism; if it is not our outfit it’s our makeup or some other thing. So it was a down time for us emotionally. And no one understood that period. Successfully climaxing our first semester (year 1), we were due for the next semester but we had to stay away from school the whole period and resumed just three weeks before the second semester exams due to financial constraints." -Precious.
LIMELIGHT
Against the odds, the beautiful, petite and soft spoken duo recorded outstanding first class results in their first semester which brought them out of their seeming obscurity and encouraged them to even become better. Hence, they replicated the feat and maintained a high academic performance throughout every other semester.
BIOLOGICAL TWINS
Bee and Pee as they are fondly called by most people are blood sisters with Bee (Beulah) being a year older. But they explain that they were always treated like twins from childhood and they have always been best friends since then. On entering into Novena University they revived their childhood culture and recreated their identical appearance. Their hairstyle, outfit, possessions and everything (including grades) were identical! Soon they were known all over the school as "The Novena Twins"; a wisdom and an indivisible bond that gave them an edge and improved their self esteem.
TEAM
Studying together, they faced their challenges on same front as well as divided pain and multiplied joy by two! Their bond became even stronger. "We were always together everywhere except in the examination halls where we were made to be so far apart. According to the University's Senate ruling, we were prohibited from being anywhere close to each other after recording an identical GPA at 5.00 in our first semester"-Beulah.
CHANGE
As appreciated by most, soon enough their fashion style gradually improved and attracted praise in place of the scorn that initially almost choked them out; they had to develop several responsible means of tackling their problems within their means. They were typical of brainstorming and seeking improvement in every aspect of their lives.
FRIENDSHIPS
The duo recorded several reasonable friendships they made that enlivened their emotional life and aided their academic routine not to be one of boring monotony.
THE GOD FACTOR
"Our life in school was one within the confines of God's law. We weren't involved in any antisocial or immoral acts. I recall we depended solely on God for our ultimate decisions and you know what? I don't also recall us asking Him any favours and were denied; even to the "meaningless minorities."-Beulah.
ACHIEVEMENTS AND PLANS
According to The ONORIODES, their challenges in school propelled them to be realistic.
MUSIC SINGLE
Gifted in the arts and lovers of music, they produced a unique literary piece in their third year. The song captures the damage the world offers and yet our inevitable duty to love has been considered a "CRIME". The ‘single’ 'Precious Crime' has received mostly positive comments from all around.
HAIR CARE PRODUCT
Incredible yet, they have both extended their intellectual prowess, achieving a landslide scientific breakthrough: ''LUSH''- an A-Z natural negro hair care product that will be first of its kind! It promises satisfying all the age long wishes of the typical African man and Woman.
THE MOTHERHOOD DREAM
Owing to that fact that Bee survived several psychological problems which climaxed in BPD at her 400level, the duo have built a system "MotherWorld", a home that will unite people of different cultures in the unique purpose of "healing" the world as well as unite distinct works of art that will be interwoven in isolated dynamism. Showcasing recurrently, all her features will "wow" in this 21st century!
LEGACY
Noteworthy, The ONORIODES explain they have left a legacy for many of the students: an enduring spirit of love as exemplified in the duo's lives. But how? The light complexioned valedictorian explains. "As role models of good character and academic output, we shared and enjoyed an enviable bond and I think what we were in Novena for four years, will not be transitioned to vapour, but will last forever in the lives of those who have imbibed and the more lot who will be woven into our unique cord of friendship."
"Ours is not sorority but an example that both young women and men have found worthy enough to emulate. A lot have approached us...they look to being like us someday and we're more than proud to be good influence."-Precious.
CONVOKING
According to the Vice Chancellor, Novena University Ogume, during their 3rd Convocation ceremony and 10th Anniversary on March 19, 2016, "one of the highpoints of today's graduation is the spectacular performance of Onoriode Beulah and Onoriode Precious, two siblings that are graduating today from the Department of Mass Communication with First Class honours..." as the duo were graduated as valedictorian with CGPA of 4.90 and Second Best Graduating Student, with CGPA of 4.85, Class of 2015 respectively.
Well attended by a host of dignitaries from all works of life, present was His Excellency, The Executive Governor of Delta State, Senator (Dr.) Ifeanyi Arthur Okowa and recipients of honorary degrees which included Senator David Mark, Her Excellency, Wife of The Executive Governor of Ogun State, Olufunsho Amosun, Eng. Gabriel Ogbechie (CEO RainOil), Gen. Paul Tarela Boroh (Rtd), amongst others.
Noteworthy, the valedictorian still managed to steal the occasion by delivering a beautiful and emotional piece, sharing her experiences in the university, vis-à-vis preparing the graduates for the challenges the "real" world holds.
