Igbo brides are said to be the most ‘expensive’ when it comes to carrying out the traditional marriage rites

The Igbo tribe in Nigeria pride themselves as a people whose cultural standards are very high. A typical Igbo person is said to be very industrious and hard-working. The average person is assumed to be sophisticated and hates to do things in half measures.

Igbo ladies are said to be one of the most beautiful ladies in Nigeria, so a lot is expected of any man opting to take one as a bride.

The Igbo lady being well-trained, industrious, beautiful as well as accommodating, are said to be the contributing factors to why their bride price is one of if not the highest in Nigeria.

The bride price practice of giving out a ‘long and rich’ list, has been in existence for a very long time. This practice is perhaps a direct message to a potential suitor, about the importance attached to a female child in Igbo land.

The contents of this kind of list has been said to discourage a couple of men from marrying their Igbo brides. Below is a picture of a typical list for a bride from Abia state:

What do you think?

Used to be, but "Evuvu Manya" is not Anambra language. Anambra calls it "Igba Nkwu" and they may call it "Ebubu Manya". The "V" sound instead of "b" is not Anambra.

Such expensive marriage used to be deterrent for high divorce rate and abuse of wives. If Nigeria has data for divorce statistics, it may show that Igbos have lower rate of divorce and spousal abuse. However, Those who still practice it have special reasons for doing so; because these days education has enlightened people to see in-laws as part of the family, and economic pressures compel families to accept whatever in-laws could afford. Above all, ladies of these days marry themselves off before they would even introduce their future husbands.

You are right but with 1/5 of this things mentioned you will still marry
you don't go and marry with N10.00 tomorrow you divorce and marry another
at least when you rememeber the money you spent you will respect her

I think it is a curse for Parents to impose anything on their inlaw to marry a girl. Read your Bible and you will understand that "bride price" was paid when a virgin was raped.
Genesis 34 : 1-12. and by the way it is the first time in the Bible that the word is mentioned, not by Jacob or any of his ancestors, but by the pagan Hamor.

When there was no issue, the man will bring PRESENTS to the Girl first and to her family. the family will then ask her if she wanted to go with the man, bless her and let her go. Genesis 24 : 47-61

Today it has become business for many African Families. Shame on you who call yourselves Christians and sell your daughters at a particular price.
Girls it is time to rise up and say no to your parents. Do not allow them to sell you.

I have taken the decision not to ever collect a price on my daughter if God bless me with one. I will let her Hubby FREELY give whatever he wants ( Presents).
And even if he has nothing to give me, but will treat my girl like a queen, it will be enough for me.
