NEXT gathered that Mr. Akpan, a retired army General and leading member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the state, was taken away within the premises of his local Qua Iboe church, close to his private residence where he had gone to worship.
The armed men were said to have shot sporadically into the air before forcing him into a waiting car and drive him away.
Information has been sketchy regarding either the brains behind the kidnap or the reason, though reports said the action might not be unconnected with growing political intrigues playing out in the state in the run up to the 2011 governorship race.
Mr. Akpan was a prominent ally of former governor, Victor Attah, and a key player in that administration. He was also said to have been close to the incumbent governor, Godswill Akpabio, who appointed him Chairman of Universal Energy Limited, a company involved in the oil and gas business.
